  • Schengen Reentry as American - complicated

    Hello,
I'm an American living in Berlin. I came as a tourist and stayed for my 90 days here, and decided to extend my stay by taking some language courses. So, I got a visa (Aufenthaltstitel), which lasts until April 15.

My (potential) problem is that I'm going back to the US from April 2-17. So: I reenter Schengen (Chicago - one stop in Paris - then back to Berlin) two days after my German visa is up. I know that as an American, I have 90 days within a 180 period, but I'm not sure how my stay here with my visa affects that.

I called the Auslaenderbehoerde (German visa agency for foreigners), and they said I'll have no problem. I called the Bundespolizei (German border control police) and they said I have 180 days, and then when I come back to Germany after being in the US, that I have ANOTHER 180 days... so according to them I definetly have no problem. But their info goes against everything I've read, even though they are the border police and should know what they're talking about.

Everyone tells me I'll have no problem whatsoever reentering Schengen, but I'm worried that I will in fact have a problem when I try to reenter, at which point the person behind the counter in Paris won't care what the Auslaenderbehoerde or Bundespolizei in Germany told me (!).

I'm thinking about "losing" my passport when I get back to the US, and getting a new one expedited before I reenter Schengen...

Does anyone have any advice or a similar situation?

    Thank you!
