Transit Visa for France

Hi everyone,

I am planning to go to New Delhi from DC via Paris in december. My student visa has expired and i am going to get my H1 stamping done. I read on the french embassy that i will need a transit visa. Can anyone please tell me how much time it takes to get the transit visa? Is it a walk in process or do i need to make an appointment?
Also, i am presuming that i don't need to check my baggage again in Paris to the flight from Paris to Delhi. Someone told me i would need to do that. Can anyone please clarify that?
