Schengen visa - UK

Hello,

I am a US permanent resident living in USA and holding Belarusian citizenship. I am planning to study abroad this summer in London, but I am also planning to visit France and Germany while in UK.

Do I need both UK and Shenghen visas? If yes, can I apply for UK visa in USA and for Shenghen in London? What kind of Schengen visa should I get since I will probably be visiting other countries for 1-2 days?
