My husband, who holds a valid US green card, was denied boarding of his flight to Belguim from Cote d"Ivoire. The reason given was that he didn't have a transit visa to take a connecting flight to Frankfurt, where we was to get his flight home, that same day. Until this occurred, I had never heard of the Schengen Agreement. Since then, I have done much research on the internet and still cannot get my questions answered:
Is he required to get a transit visa to change flights in Schengen areas, if he is a holder of a valid US Green card?
Did the airlines have the right to deny him passage (and thus lose the entire non-transferable ticket)?
This situation has cost us nearly $3,000 so far, and he is still stuck in Africa. I have booked him a flight, through Morrocco, back to the US, circumventing Europe completely.
If he should not have been denied passage, what recourse do we have to recoup the lost money?
Thank you.
