Hello,
I am a US citizen and about 1.5 years ago I was in Germany for a business trip for little over 3 weeks. During my first week there I had a medical emergency and had to go to a local clinic where I received some drugs and had a blood test taken. As I am a US citizen and didn't have German health insurance, I told them I would pay for everything out of pocket. The nurse had taken down my passport information, my home address, etc. in the computer system and said they were going to send me a bill in the mail, after which we could simply do a bank transfer from the US to their account in Germany to pay the expenses (which were probably less than 500 euros.)
I returned from my trip to Germany after the three weeks, however did not receive anything in the mail either at my hotel while I was in Germany or after I came back from Germany since. After I came back, about six months ago I tried to call the klinik in Germany to check on the Bill. They told me that the bill had been sent to my hotel in Germany (after I had already came back to the US,) and returned back to them as I was no longer there. I told them I wanted to pay the bill however they said that they are unable to send the bill outside of Germany.
Since then I have changed jobs and now my new company wants to send me to Germany. I realize that since I never received the bill for the healthcare costs at the clinic, I may have unpaid bills and fines in Germany. I don't want this to block my entrance to Germany or cause any future problems, or worse, get held up at immigration or worse.
I am willing to pay off any bills or fines I might have as I don't want something like this lingering around or blocking my entrance to Germany. Would I get into trouble reentering Germany after 1.5 years if I do have such a fine? Could it be worse, like an arrest warrant or something? Should I call our local German consulate to check?
I did a credit check and my credit score is near perfect and I don't have any negative reports on my credit. I just don't want to have problems reentering Germany due to some overdue or unpaid medical bills that I never received in the mail. I do want to pay off any bills that I might have, just to set things right. Any ideas how I can follow up on this?
I would appreciate any ideas on how to go about this!?
Thanks!
