Travelling after Applying H1B , i am in OPT

I am in OPT and OPT is valid till Feb 2014. My employer will be applying for H1B this year . Is it safe to travel in the month of May. What are my options, Can i ask my employer to postpone my application til i return back or deffer it to next year. Is there any other option while applying...
