  • Stuck in a vicious cycle.

Hi, I tried searching on here for an answer but couldn't find anything, so I thought I'd pose the question.

I just started OPT at a university, working as a lecture (in life sciences). My position is for 12 months, and the same job will be offered this year for a tenure track appointment. So I'm obviously going to apply. The big problem is that the OPT is only for one year, and without some employment authorization, I will have no chance of getting the job (they are very worried about appearing to be employing an illegal immigrant). But them again, from what I can tell it's impossible to get a green card, or even a visa without the university offering permanent employment first, and them being willing to support my application.

Is there a way I can make this happen? I've been in the US for 8 years now, while doing my PhD, employed as a TA... is that any help? I think aside from this immigration issue I have a good chance of getting the job, but this just seems like an impassable obstacle.

    Anyone have any advice?

    Thanks,
    Rachael.

Speak with the University HR, office of International education and hiring supervisor for the position. Most universities regularly sponsor green cards and H1's and in fact are good at it. For professors it is not too difficult to get green cards.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
