Do I need transit visa?

In 1 weeks times I have flight from USA to India. I have about 10 hrs layover in London. I was planning to go to the city for couple of hrs.
I am Indian. Have greencard. Do I need transit visa? Has anyone done this before?

I have been in the same situation as you. Stay calm. If you have a US green card and are an Indian citizen, you do not need a transit visa if you are just stopping over at the airport in London. However, when you leave the airport, it is different.

You can TWOV (Transit Without Visa) if you have a US green card and are just transiting through airport.

You can remain in the international transit area between flights without passing through UK border control, and you won’t need any transit or visitor visa. This is because you hold a valid US Green Card, which qualifies you for a UK airside transit visa exemption. Thank You!

To clarify what others have said: since you want to leave the airport, you will need a Standard Visitor Visa — the TWOV/airside transit exemption only applies if you stay airside.

With a US Green Card, Indians are exempt from the airside transit visa, but leaving the terminal requires a separate visitor visa. Apply in advance at gov.uk. Processing typically takes a few weeks, so given your 1-week timeline, exiting the airport may not be feasible this trip.
