  • Adopted minor w/ citizenship papers wants to change name

Hi - hopefully someone here can help me.

I adopted my son from Colombia over 4 years ago. My son was 9 at the time and I was not allowed to change his name in any way other than to give him my maiden last name on his colombian birth certificate.

This has caused us a number of difficulties and we are now trying to change his first and middle name.

I have his citizenship papers and his US passport under the name he was adopted with. It is my understanding that to legally change his name now I, or my agent, would need to travel to the city of his birth to do this (we did this at the time of the adoption). Obviously that is not desirable.

I was also told that naturalization gives him a US birth certificate, making it easier to then change his name. But that process was expensive and didn't seem worth the price as he already has plenty of proof of citizenship.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation? How can I change my Colombian born childs name without travelling to Colombia or naturalizing him?

Please do not answer if you do not know the facts? I have heard a ton of advice and suggestions. I am looking for facts please.

Thank you all for reading my post.
