Urgent---"Status Information Letter" from Selective Service for N400 Application

Hi anyone including Cafecanieche can offer a guidance here is greatly appreciated:

I'm about to file N400 form, but just find out a disturbing problem. As I came to the States as F-1 student at age of 23 without registering with Selective Service, and now I'm over 37, accoridng to the Form, I would need to contact Selective Service to issue a "Status Inforamtion Letter" to explain to USCIS why I didn't register. I contacted Selective Service who said that in order for such letter to be issued, I need to provide documents showing I was full time student during that period (between 23 years old until 26).

But it's been so long so I no longer would keep all the I-20s in my record, addtionally, the first school I attended was merged with another school 10 years ago, and all the record have been expunged so they cannot issue a letter for me to prove I was there in the program for 1 year.

This is really odd situation, does any of you have any good suggestion? Really appreciate it, if I don't have this sorted out in next few days, I would miss the date to file my N400 under 90 day rule.

Another question is that how long will take Selective Service to issue such "Status Information Letter" if I got all document in order.

Well do you then have any official document indicating you were in non-immigrant F-1 student visa status between the age of 23 to 26? It is extremely important on this section (Selective Services requirement) for the USCIS to know why whether you, knowingly or not, did not register for Selective Services. Now, we know you were not required to register for Selective Services at that point of time due to your status. How about trying to approach Selective Services again, explaining to them about your situation. If no help, I suggest present it yourself your own "Applicant's Statement". In there, you should certify to USCIS exactly what happens: that you were in non-immigrant status, that you had no idea you were required to register for SS. You can end the letter by your official statement of swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but just the truth. Maybe it'll help and it'll be at the discretion of the Immigration Officer to decide. Again, it's just my suggestion. I hope you can find a way out, and if you do, please do share!
