  • Applying N600 and travelling to India before Naturalization

    Hi,

Both myself and my son (15 years) are GC holders currently and planning to applying for Citizenship before 90 days of 5 years continuous stay in US. My question is "Can my son travel to India after applying N600 before 3 months for 5 years continuous stay requirement?"

Is he going to get the Citizenship while he is out of USA or is there any problem in getting his citizenship?

Please help on these two questions.

    Thanks, sjagarla

There are many steps in US naturalization process: application, fingerprinting, exam, oath. And you need to be in US for all of that. Time duration between each step may no be very long. Therefore, it is not recommended that you travel outside the US during the processing.

You can travel at any time, as long as someone checks the mail to tell you your appointments (fingerprinting, interview, oath, etc.) for you to either keep them or, if you don't mind possible significant delays, ask for them to rescheduled. As long as you don't stay out for too long (6 months at a stretch) you will be okay. Your son cannot apply as he isn't 18. If he lives with you, he will automatically become a citizen the moment you do. Only then can you file the N600 and/or passport application.
