  • Should I bring Tax Return documents to the interview ?

Hello. I have a naturalization interview coming up at the end of the month, in California. On my application, regarding the question which asked whether or not I have failed to file a tax return since I became a lawful resident I answered : Yes. However the reason I haven't filed any in the last 5 years (I have been a resident for the same amount of time) is because my parents are also American residents since the same date as me, and have filled tax returns every year with me written in as a dependent. When filling out form N-400 I added an additional sheet of paper which explained my situation.

My interview appointment letter, the one which has my name and address on it etc, makes no mention of a requirement imposed on me to bring any tax related documents. A second document, which came in the same envelope, and appears to be a generic Document Checklist sheet (a copy of which can be found on the USCIS website) mentions that one should bring tax documents if he/she is applying on the basis of marriage, or if one has any overdue, unpaid taxes.

At home I have the relevant tax return documents with original signatures. Should I bring these along to the interview ? Searching around the web seems to suggest that brining in any extra documents which were not explicitly asked for could create potential problems. However in my case I can certainly see the interviewer asking me about taxes in view of my answers on the N-400 application.

What do you guys think ?

The best you can provide is a written statement, signed and notarized, explaining that you lacked the income needed to be required to file an income tax return, and that you were a dependent on your parents' return(s). Bring a copy of the last parents' return which shows you as a dependent.
