  • Will this count as days spent in the US? (Unique case I think)

    Hello,

The thing is that I just got accepted to get a family based green card through my dad who works for the Department of State. He now works in DC, where I was planning to join him next summer after I finish my military service. The case is that he got a new post in the country Im living in now, from next summer. I turn 21 before he will travel abroad.

If I'm correct, you days spent outside of the US, if on official orders from the US government, or on a contract from the US government, will count as days spent in the US, for naturalization purposes. As Im turning 21 while he will be living abroad I will not be able to be on his official travel orders, but I will be a "Member of household". This is what the Department of State states about MOH's "A Member of Household (MOH) is an individual who resides with a Foreign Service employee at post, has been declared to post management, but is not on the employ- ee‘s official travel orders." As I need to me declared to post management, does this count as a contract with the US government? And will I be able to use this to count my days (3 years) here before, I will return to live with him in the US when his assignments end and I plan to take my Masters?

For me this is very unfortunate, as I want to live with my dad for the first time (this was why I got my green card) and I also want to become a US citizen. Is there any way I can live with my dad abroad for 3 years, before following him back to the states and continue my residency and naturalize? Is my only option to just keep my green card valid by traveling to the states a couple of weeks every 3-4 months for 3 years, before I can live there 100% of the time for the next years and beyond?

As you can see my case is kind of unique. I don't know about a lot of children soon turning 21, that have a parent who naturalized and is working in Department of state, while they only just got a green card.

I really hope to get some good input here, so I can figure out how to live with my dad and become a US citizen as fast as possible (5 years from now hopefully).

    Can't wait to become American!
    USA! USA! USA!

If there is any questions regarding my situation, please ask, I will try to answer to the best of my abilities!

    Best Regards,

    Me, Petter.
