  • Name change and required documents

    Hi,

I am getting ready to file for citizenship. I got my greencard through my employer. I got married a year ago and did the name change on my marriage certificate. I have not changed my name on any other document. If I want to keep my maiden name, can I just fill in that name on the N400 form ? Will it be an issue since I will have to provide a copy of my marriage certificate ?

Also, I have not been out of the country for more than 2 months since I got my green card. On the INS website it says that one needs to provide copies of paystubs, tax returns, mortage/rent payments only if one has been out of the country for more than 6 months. On immihelp, it lists these as required documents, as far as I understand. Please clarify. If these are required, how long back do we have to go ?

    Thanks!

    1. If you have changed your name at the time of marriage, and if you want to keep your maiden name, you will have to go through name change process again through court.

    2. Those documents are NOT required. Those are required only for > 6 months stay outside US. Could you please tell me where does it say they are required in your case?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I must have misread the document checklist.
