  • Was not able to register to Selective Service

    Hi,
My husband and I had our green card issued in 03Jan2001.
At that time, my husband was only 25 years old and was turning 26, August of the same year. Upon receiving our green card in the mail I remember some documentation that reminded to register for Selective Service.
Unfortunately, we did not realize that it was mandatory and that by law my
husband should have registered. Only now that we are preparing to file for Naturalization did we learn about it (referring to form N-400 section G).

Based on my readings in the internet the government can no longer file
charges when a person reaches 31 years of age. However, this may still have an effect when filing for other benefits such as applying for citizenship. This is the site where I got the information from: http://www.afsc.org/youthmil/selecti...-Service.htm#6

We're now afraid that this issue may altogether affect both mine and my
husband's application. We are so much hoping to get approval as we plan to petition my parents who will be helping us take care of our new born daughter.

Has anyone have the same experience? Can you tell us what you did?

Thanks and i appreciate very much your time on this.

I am no expert but my question is why should your position be jeopodized if your husband did not apply for selective service? You should be able to apply for naturalization by the merit of your own 5 year residency rule. You can then petetion for YOUR parents who will not have any waiting period... however I am not sure how soon they will get their green card.
