  • My interview experience at Newark on October 2018

These testimonies helped me a lot as I was getting ready for my interview so I thought I would share my experience of the last step of getting my citizenship on October 2nd.
I was looking for parking in Newark but behind the immigration building there's a parking lot that costs a maximum of $20. Just a note, If you park on broad street past 4 pm you will be towed.
My father's appointment was at 10 AM and my mother and my appoitment was at 11:30. We got there at 9:40 and waited, and waited, and waited some more. I asked the people around me and they waited about two hours from their appointment time to take their interview. Our family was called up at 1:30 PM altogether. We submitted our n 400 applications together so the same person interviewed us back to back. First my father, my mother and then me. My dad's writing question was "we pay taxes" and mine was, "George Washington was the first president." We all studied very hard for the civics questions and my parents stayed up practicing their writing. So when we took it, we all agreed it was very easy. We were prepared for more intense probing questions about the application but the interviewer just went over questions and nothing more.
Now, my main concern was taking the oath at the same day as the interview. Thankfully, Newark is one of the few offices that do it all on the same day. Then I got worried that because I wanted to legally change my name that it would have to be in front of a judge on another day. When I asked, thankfully, it was all on the same day. I REPEAT even when you change your legal name, you can take the oath on the same day as your interview at the Newark NJ offices. The only hold up was that when you change your name, the offices need another passport photo. So I went to a place that was 2 minute walk away, paid $13 and came back in time before our name was called up again.
Anyways, it was a long day waiting in there but praise the lord, now I'm a U.S. Citizen!
