  • Selective Service Requirement

    Hi All,

Quick question. Filling out my N400 online and came across the Selective Service requirement question. I received my Permanent Resident Status when I was 25yrs old. I honestly couldn't remember if I had registered. So I looked it up and yes I did. HOWEVER, I apparently registered for Selective Service when I was 21yrs old and on a student visa. Presumable I got registered when I got my SSN or at the DMV or something. But now my question is, how do I respond to the question on the N400? On the one hand I registered and I have the letter to prove it. On the other hand I didn't never registered as an immigrant (honestly not even sure if I could've re-registered)....so what would be the advise?

    Thank you for any information.

There is no such thing as "register as an immigrant". Once you are registered, you are registered. You are not required to register as a nonimmigrant. You are only required to register as US citizen or national, permanent resident, asylee, refugee, or illegal immigrant (out of status), etc. So I don't know why you registered when on student status when you didn't need to; but it doesn't matter why. You registered, so it's all good.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
