  • Name Change during/after naturalization?

My wife wants to change her last name from maiden name. She didn't opt for name change in N-400 application as we thought it might delay the process. We are waiting for the interview date.

    1. If we do it after getting naturalized, what will be the procedure for name change?

    2. Do we need to apply for an updated naturalization certificate after doing a name change?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You

    Hi,

You can't change during the interview process anymore (at least in SF bay area). You need to go to local court to change the name. The laws for changing the name differ from state to state.

The naturalization certificate is a temporary proof of your citizenship until you get your passport. You can apply for the passport with a new name.

    Hope this helps.
