  • Travel back to India after getting US Passport

    Hi

I am a US Green card holder. Obtained GC in Aug 2002, after than resided in USA for 2.5 years and then moved to India and presently plan to continue living/working in India at least for the next forseeable future. I have been making trips to USA every six months to satisfy continuous residence requirement since returning to India.

For all the benefits US citizenship entails, I am contemplating filing for US citizenship in Feb 2007, as my 4 years 9 months after GC would be over. I am still not sure if it is the right thing to do, or if there could be any problems in future.

    Questions:

    1. Suppose I qualify for US citizenship and get the US passport after the oath ceremony. Can I travel back to india on Indian passport and apply for OCI in India? (or do I have to apply for OCI or Indian visa while in USA before I can come to India?)

    2. Is Indian passport a proof of indian citizenship? Not everyone in india has a passport. I have a PAN Card and rationcard. Can I not live and operate in India just like anyone else?

    3. Is there any likelihood or bill already presented in Indian parliament that would offer complete Full Dual Citizenship instead of OCI in future?

    thanks for your feedback

Reply to your question 1: Oce you get US passport you HAVE to have indian visa or OCI or PIO to travel to India. you are not legally allowed to use your Indian passport and you will be surrendering your green card during the oath ceremony.
