  • Moving overseas after applying for naturalization?

Can I move overseas after filing the application for naturalization? I have been told that I cannot, all dates in the naturalization guide pertain to adjudication.

If I can, can I be fingerprinted, interviewed and take the oath at an overseas location? Or do I have to make trips back to the US local office I filed at for the above?

There is no explicit mention in the guide about residency requirements after you apply, all that is mentioned is for before the application.

Your feedback will be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

I have exactly the same question. May I start the naturalization process and move overseas?

To be eligible for naturalization you must have residence in the US unless you are a military personnel-then you can be pretty much anywhere. You can NOT go through FP or the interview process overseas, you can however, keep a residence here, travel overseas without breaking the 6 month rule or total time out of the US rule, and attend the FP and the interview process in the US. If you fail to show residence in the US, your application will be denied. Hope this helps.

How do you show proof of residence during the naturalization process? Do you have to have a lease or own a house during that period? Or is it enough if you stay with relatives and give their address?

Is there any documentation per say that you need to show for proof of residence?

Still unclear, can I to to work abroad if I have just applied

            Hi,

If I am eligible in every way, and I apply immediately, can I leave to go work abroad 3 months after application? Would they reject my offer because I am working abroad although I have not broken any rules of eligibility?

I intend to keep my residence but I have an offer to work abroad for a year or longer. I can come back for my interview, etc.

Are there any other workarounds if I cannot go abroad and work immediately?

            thanks,
            R

I have exactly the same issue.
I'm thinking of working abroad for 5-6 months during the naturalization process, and i'm definitely going to get a huge "WORKING VISA JAPAN" stamp in my passport.

The question here is, if i return during the process for short trips to take FP, interview and OATH, can i still pass the application with a foreign work visa in my passport?

              thanks a lot

Perm residence is for living and WORKING in US. Once you have citizenship, you can.

You need to decide if US citzenship is that important to you.
