  • changing name process

    Hi,

I am getting marriage in August 2007 and I want to take my fiance's last name when we get married.

I am a permanent resident and I am now eligible to apply for citizenship. I don't feel any hurry to apply now, so I am wondering if it would be best to change my name through the citizenship application, or should I just apply for a replacement green card for my new name?

I know that applying to a replacement green card is costly, so it might be an advantage to change my name through naturalization (since it is included in the price). However, if it takes 6 months before I can do my name change and oath, does that mean I can't use my new name until then?

In both options, when should I change my name on my ss card, driver's lisence, credit cards, etc?

    Thanks

It can delay your naturalization process by 6 months or more, if you want to do it at that time.

It is your call. Do you want to spend some money and get it done now? Or wait for 6 more months?
