  • getting married/register after taking Oath

    Hi forum members,
I got naturalized today (became a US citizen) and would like to know if I can marry by proceeding with getting my marriage license and registering the marriage in US. Or, Do I need to wait for my US passport to arrive and get the confirmation that my Indian passport is surrendered to the Indian Embassy successfully so that I can get married?

Sorry if this is a silly question. The purpose is to apply for my spouse's green card by filing I-130, I-485 and all other necessary documents immediately after the marriage.

Thanks for the response in advance.

    You Can, Anytime

    Dear Friend,

First of all there are no silly questions. There are of course repeated ones, but yours is not one of them.

The moment you tool the oath and got your naturalization certificate, you're an UNITED STATES CITIZEN.

You can do anything and everything as an US citizen.

The US passport etc. is an additional formality that you may choose to get immediately or later depending upon your requirement. If you plan to stay in the country, you do not need the US passport immediately.

You don't have to necessarily surrender the Indian passport. If you wish you can send it to CGI who will cancel it and send it back to you as a souvenir!

Also, once you get your US passport, you can apply for your PIO or OCI.

Good luck and best wishes for your wedding.
