  • US Citizenship eligibility requirements

    Dear Sir,

My wife and myself are Permanent Residents since 2/21/2003. I read on some of user forums that you can apply for the US citizenship once you complete 4 years as a PR. Is this true? Or do I need to wait until I complete 5 years.
The reason I am asking this question is: My wife got a conditional job offer for Correctional Officer with California Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She successfully met all the conditions and she is having her background investigation now. The background check was stopped because she is not a citizen. She is in PR status for 4 years now. She was told by CDCR that they can process the background investigation on the basis of INS accepting her naturalization application. Please suggest if it is okay to apply for the citizenship now or wait until we complete 5 years in PR status.
    Thanks for your help.
