  • Oath in Georgia

I had my interview on June 17th, 2008. When the officer called me into the office... she asked me if someone contacted me to let me know that they don't have a stack of files for today's interview. I told her no. We then proceeded with the interview. She told me that I passed the interview however I will not be able to get sworn in today b/c they did not have my file. She said that I will get a letter in the mail in about 1 week advising me on my day to get sworn in. It is now July 21st and I am yet to hear from them. This is so unfair b/c my aunt got sworn in the same day of her interview and my cousin got sworn in a week after her interview? I also called USCIS about this, and they told me I will have to wait 90days and then call them back. It is like they read from a script and won’t even look up the case status. I mean supposed they sent me a letter and it never got to me… how will I know if I missed the sworn in date unless someone looks it up? The case status online does not even help b/c it give me an error and tells me that my receipt number is not valid. Is anyone else having the same problem in GA?

    call or get infopass appointment

I suggest, you should call uscis and then these menu options 1-2-2-6-2-4, you will get an operator on the line, tell them you want to get status on your naturalization application. As you mentioned that you can look up your status online, the customer service operator won't be able to look it up as well. You will be transferred to the first level immigration officer who should be able to give you your case status. Its just my personal experience because my case status doesn't show up online either and I always get transferred to get status.
    Good Luck

It is true. You have to wait past 90 days to contact them. Until then they will not look into your case. Don't bother calling them. They are not friendly and you will get more frustrated with the answer you get. There are times when people get the oath letter soon but the correct time frame for you to be contacted is 90 days. If you do not hear from them after 3 months, make an infopass appointment to speak with an immigration officer, in person, at your local field office. They will then advise you on your application status.

And to answer your last question. Don't worry about your letter being lost. USCIS will send a second notice to contact you if they do not hear from you. So, let's say your letter gets lost in mail, which is extremely rare, and you miss your oath ceremony. USCIS will then try to get in touch with you via mail to reschedule your oath. It's not something to sweat on so don't panic. You will get your letter in due time. Remember, after your infopass appt you will have to wait an additional 30 days to get a reply from them. Sounds crazy but this is their procedure. In all, a total of 120 days if everything works out smoothly.

        Oath in GA

Not to worry. This happened to me as well. I passed the exam, but they told me that some of the files were missing. It took them almost three months and then I got my oath ceremony letter. I think they wait until they get a sizeable audience to administer the oath.

If you want to make sure, as suggested by others, make an infopass appointment to make sure that nothing is wrong.

        Regards and good luck!

          Oath In GA--- Update

So I got a phone call from the immigration officer last Tues 07/22/2008. She stated that when she was reviewing my paper work she noticed that my file was missing some information and that I had to get a letter stating a few things.

She told me once I got the letter to give her a call. She gave me her direct extension. So I got the letter yesterday 07/29/2008 and called her. She arranged a time for me to drop it off which was today 07/30/2008 at 8am.

I meet with her today and she reviewed the paper work and then took it to someone else to review. She said that I might be able to get sworn in today. However after my file was reviewed... she advised me that they were not conducting oath ceremonies today . She then stated that I will get a letter in 1 - 2 weeks stating when I will be able to take to oath. So basically I am at the waiting stage once more..

Thanks so much for the replies and help....

When I went to the interview, the officer basically went through my application and asked me questions regarding the application. Like questions directly off the application. Then she asked me 6 civics questions. After the civics portion she asked to see my passport, birth certificate, two passport size pictures and a letter from my employer. She then asked me to read a sentence that said "We are smart that we know this". She also asked me to write a sentence on a piece of paper. Then she asked me to write my name in cursive on a piece of paper and then on the passport size pictures. At the end of it she said that I passed and I should receive a letter telling me when my oath day is.

                  I hope this helps.

What does the letter state? does it not have a receipt or application number?

                      Update 09/03/2008

I made an appointment win Info Pass to see what the status is on the case b/c it has been four weeks since I last meet with the immigration officer. At the info pass appointment, the immigration officer advised me that they sent me a letter in the mail on August 27th to inform me that my oath is on Sept 26th. Sounds great right?? But I already have confirmed flight to go to my home country on SEPTEMBER 25th, for my cousins wedding that I am in. I AM SOOOOO UPSET. For all the time that I waited to get sworn in…. now they want me to come in when I will be out of the country. I advised the immigration officer that I will be out of the country. She stated that when I receive the letter from them I will need to return it stating that I will not be able to make it and request them to reschedule the oath for me. She also advised me that I will be placed in a back log and probably will not be able to take the oath anytime soon. So I guess I won’t be going to the wedding. Any idea on how long it takes to get reschedule for the oath?
