  • Name Change at the Time of Interview (Sacramento, CA)

I have my naturalization interview scheduled in 3rd week of September in Sacramento, California. I would like to change my name at the time of interview. Actually I just want to add a middle name since I never have had one. I do not want to change my first or last name. Would that delay the processing? My Indian passport in expiring in October 2008, and I would like to take the oath as soon as possible after my interview, and would like to get the U.S passport before my Indian passport expires.
If adding a middle name would delay the processing, can I do a name change after the oath, and getting the certificate? Would I need to apply for a new certificate with my new name? Please advise. Thanks.

is it the oath ceremony? If it is, do you know location, date, and time it is?

Best practice is to file the name change on the form N-400.

In your case you tell the officer at the time of interview that you want to change your name, and officer will give you a name change form, in most cases it gets done right away. In New Jersey it took only 2 minutes to do the formalities to get the name change. When my sisiter did a name change at the time of an interview. An officer gave a name change form and then he issued the Naturalization certificate right away with a new name.

Yeah! i understand your intention about name change .But according to my knowledge before applying U.S passport ,you can definitely change your name as you desire. They should be some legal procedures for this.Hope once's you change your name ,can you give me information about this process of changing name.

Well I just had my interview yesterday and got my name changed or got set up for mmy name change.a The only difference in processong times is that I l had to sign some addotional paperwork for my name change. So we are tolking about 2 more minutes, if that? What the officer has told me, whther or not I change my name will not matter, will not make it any faster or any slower. Here in Oklahoma they don't swear people in the same day anyway, they have to wait till they have enough people that got approved and then they hold the ceremony. But perhaps some states where there is a chance of taking the Oath the same day it could delay the procedure...I got my GC in Cali and I remember there were huge lines at there USCIS, hour of wait, in one day they go through more people than they do here in one month. Here the USCIS office is nearly empty.
