Updating I-130,please share your experience

Hi all
I will be updating pending I-130 for my spouse next week.It was filed on Mach 01,2006 and it is still unapproved.I am not sure how the process works,I searched a bit online but still dont have a clear understanding.Once I update ,should I go for K visa or immigrant visa,which process takes longer

Please share your knowledge,if you have a clear insight of the process and if you have any links that explains it well.
