Question: Renewing Indian Passport while US Citizenship application is in process

Hello, We recently completed the Citizenship interview and now we are scheduled for the Oath ceremony in August. My wife's current passport (Indian) expires in July, Do we need to renew that ? or should we wait for the oath ceremony to complete and then apply for PIO / OCI ? Will it be a problem if we have the expired passport at that time ? Any help on this will be highly appreciated.

You are not US citizen until you take the oath. Therefore, you can renew Indian passport now.

Even though it may be OK not to renew your Indian passport after it expires if you are not planning to travel, it would be best to renew just to avoid any possible complications when you apply for OCI/PIO later. You may have to submit a lot more paperwork to get any service out of Indian consulate if your passport is already expired.
