  • Applying for Citizenshio but what if receiving food stamps and cash aid and owes irs?

I have a 77 yr old relative who has been in the US for more than 5 yrs. he is ill and could not work anymore. So because of his age he can recieve cash aid and food stamps from the State. He was also self employed for a while and he used to get 1099's from various companies where he used to work. There was an income that he did not know about which was reported under his name and later found out that he owes around 6K taxes plus interest. He is currently a green card holder and wants to apply for citizenship. Will he have problems because of his taxes (which was erronous) and since he is retired and has no income will he be denied citizenship because he is receiving cash aid and food stamps?

No, receiving public aid should not be a bar to receiving citizenship (although if he immigrated recently to the U.S. CIS might wonder what happened to the person who signed your relative's affidavit of support).

However if he owes taxes he needs to take care of that before he would be approved for citizenship. Either have the amount dismissed if it is an error or set up a payment plan with the IRS if he does owe and bring proof of that payment plan to the citizenship interview.
