When I was between 18 years and 26 years, I was in the U.S as a F-1 staus and did not register for selective service. On the N-400 form the question 33 is asking about selective service registration. Do I anwser "Yes" or "No". Please advice.

I'd suggest that you register first before sending out your N-400 application. That's the law. In addition, if you answer "yes," you need to carry evidence with you.Originally posted by koran View PostWhen I was between 18 years and 26 years, I was in the U.S as a F-1 staus and did not register for selective service. I agree! When my son went to his N-400 interview, the officer asked about it thou it was already there in his application form... if you were a man, it is mandatory to register in Selective service but if you were a lady, no need... so before you go to your interview.. you should register first because if you failed.. I think you have to wait for another 5 years before you'll be legible again to file for N-400, this already happened to my friend...
Goodluck!

My situation is completely the opposite. I’m currently 33 years old and between my 18th and 26th birthdays I was a lawful nonimmigrant (first on J1 and later on F1 student visa). Since I was only a student (a lawful nonimmigrant) I technically I did not have to register with Selective Service. However, for some reason, I actually registered with Selective Service. I went to their website (www.sss.gov) to confirm if I was in their database and I certainly was. According to their records I registered 7 weeks after my 18th birthday. This is now creating confusion with question 33 on the N-400 application. Since I was a lawful nonimmigrant I should answer NO and move on to the next question, but I actually did register and have a Selective Service Number. If answer YES it would imply that I was in some other status besides a lawful nonimmigrant even though I was not. Could someone please provide some advice? Which option should I select?
Option 1: Answer NO and provide Date Registered and Selective Service Number.
Option 2: Answer NO and skip to the next question without providing Date Registered and Selective Service Number.
Option 3: Answer YES and provide Date Registered and Selective Service Number.
Thank you in advance!Last edited by ChicagoGuy; 10-20-2009, 10:16 AM. Reason: Made a mistake in formulating the question.
