california citizenship application wait time

Hello:
We got our greencard on 9/10/2001. It expires on 9/10/2011. We are about to start filing for citizenship. What is the typical wait time. Do I need to get greencard extension since we have about 1.5 years before it expires? Not sure if we will get citizenship by then.
