Hi-
My wife and I are both US citizens - and my mom-in-law lives with us here in California. She has had her US permanent residency for about 3.5 years now....so she has 1.5 year to go before she can file for her US Citizenship.
We have to move to Europe for an 2-3 year "expat" gig through my work - and would like our mom-in-law to move with us there. Can she do that......and still keep her US permanent residency active? Is that doable? What all would she need to do (in terms of amount of time she needs to spend in the US, paying US taxes etc, other documentation etc.) keep her US permanent residency active until she can file for her US citizenship? Does she need to be actively living in US for her to file for her US citizenship or - can she do that while she is temporarily living in Europe??
This is of course a temporary "expat" gig...we all plan to come back to the USA after that, so not giving up our roots here.
I have read through the requirements here: https://www.immihelp.com/retain-greencard-useful-tips/
