  • Citizenship and Divorce

    This is my story:
    1. I moved to the US in 2008 and got married.
    2. I got a divorce in 2014.
    3. My green card expires next year.

My question is, will my divorce affect my citizenship process? I know that there are no risks if I am only renewing my green card. But is there a risk that I will be denied citizenship because I got a divorce?

    1. did you get your GC via marriage?
    2. what was the circumstances of the divorce?

Marriage and Divorce should not cause any issues when applying for citizenship, HOWEVER, USCIS will re-look at the history, from when you come here, to the marriage and then divorce, especially if you get your GC via marriage to make sure it was a bonafide marriage. Fraudsters (marrying for the sake of getting a GC) could stumble in this process should USCIS found anything odd with the marriage and when the initial GC got issued.
