  • Question

    Hi,

I am applying for my naturalization after having been an LPR for 5 years. Just out of curiosity, aside from the criminal/name check that the FBI performs, are there any other kinds of checks that it does?

Anything else that I should be aware of?

    Thanks in advance!

No, not really - I mean, I don't have anything on my record except for 2 speeding tickets in the 20+ years that I have lived in the US. I was wondering at what level these background checks are done - specifically, would they talk to my church, work, neighbors, coworkers etc? Not that I care but if so, I'd give them a heads up, that's all. Especially because I have a lot of elderly neighbors...

I guess that's really all I am hoping you can tell me - if all they do is look through criminal records, then that's that and I don't need to apprise anyone that they may be getting a phone call or a visit.

      Again, thanks in advance!

You don't have to worry about the speeding tickets unless they were DUI or DWI.

No, the kind of checks you are referring to are not done. They don't talke to colleagues, neighbors etc. Not to worry about it.

          God, no - no DUIs!

The reason I thought that they perform extensive checks because it seems like a simple background check where they check for one's criminal records can be done in minutes - I thought since the process takes months that the checks must be extremely involved in nature...so essentially what you are saying is that it's no different than the checks that they did prior to my permanent residency?

I wonder then why this process takes three to four months (that's what I was told anyway).

Do you have a current time estimation on your website? I don't think I saw one.

It takes months only because they are inefficient. Nothing else.

              Hi,

I am curious - I checked my N400 case status online (they received the app the first week of February) and it says that they mailed me a request for evidence a few days ago. I have not received it but I wonder what they may be asking for. I guess I will wait for the letter but would you have any idea what it may be? My case is and should be pretty straightforward.

              Thanks!

I have no way to know. You will have to wait for it to come in the mail.

I am scheduled to appear for the n-400 interview next month. The only things that they want me to bring are current and expired passports, permanent resident card and state identification - I was under the impression that they wanted to see tax returns and perhaps other things. Does that surprise you?

I am wondering if I should be proactive and bring any other documents - I just don't want them to put my application on hold because they realize that they don't all the information.

Any suggestion will be much appreciated.

                  Thanks!

You should always take any documents that you think would be relevent to your case. There is no harm.
