  • Green Card to Citizenship through marriage question

I obtained my Green Card last December (2018) and I know the process to obtain citizenship takes 5 years from the date when I received it.

I will be getting married to an American born citizen this year (2020) and know that I could apply for citizenship after 3 years through marriage.

My questions is does the 3 years only begin from the date we get married or can it count from the day I received my Green Card in Dec 2018?

To qualify for naturalization under the 3-year rule, you need to have been a permanent resident for 3 years, you need to be married for 3 years, and your spouse needs to have been a US citizen for 3 years. So the 3 years starts at the latest of 1) when you get your green card, 2) when you get married, and 3) when your spouse becomes a citizen. In this case, it starts when you get married, as that's the latest.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
