Hi All,
I'm on Green Card since Oct 2014 and applied for Naturalization during July 2019 along with my spouse.
I got my biometric done in Aug 2019, but waiting for interview and nothing since then.
My spouse had applied on the same date as me and he had his biometric with me and he got interview letter by mid Jan 2020. He had his interview during last week of Feb 2020 and passed it and also got his naturalization ceremony done on same day.
I had got my green card through him and applied for Naturalization after 5 years. We both have identical travel history outside of US and all within the limits. Only difference being, I was out of work when my previous company had laid off folks due to budget issues during Dec 2019 and they told me I'm eligible to apply for unemployment benefits ( state provided) as green card holder and I applied for it and availed it for 5 weeks until I got another job in Feb 2020. I'm wondering if my case is not moving because of claiming unemployment benefits? I did check with the state agency and they confirmed I'm eligible to claim and I have valid reason to claim and they felt this should not impact citizenship in any way. I had also heard from some folks that this is the benefit that we pay for from our salary so there is nothing wrong in claiming it. I had also looked up online in legal portals as well I got the same advice that claiming unmployment benefits should not matter for citizenship as you only need to meet the criteria on being in US for specified amount time after green card and should have the good moral character needed.
But my case has not moved while my spouse who applied along with me got his interview letter on Jan 15th and got his interview /naturalization done on Feb 24th so wondering what I should do? I called up USCIS last week and was told this is within the window for folks who applied in July 2019 ( timeframe is by Oct 2020). Do I need to check with any immigration attorney on the state benefit that I availed. Any advice or pointers will be much appreciated.
