  • Renunciation certificate

My wife became US citizen through naturalization before June 2010. Her passport was stamped saying "cancelled due to acquiring foreign nationality".

She had an Indian tourism visa on her US passport on which she travelled to India.

Now we are in process of applying OCI for her. Do we need to obtain renunciation/surrender certificate in order to get OCI?

Also, can you explain if there is any difference between surrender and renunciation certificate?

Will the cancelled passport stamp be enough to obtain OCI or do we need to apply for renunciation certificate?

I would suggest checking the document requirements on the site - ociservices.gov.in.

In short, the OCI is freshly being issued after one gets renunciation certificate - listed as an requirement (mandatory when you surrendered indian ppt in 2011 or later. not sure about 2010).
Check with your consulate or VFS directly as all documents have to be vetted by them.

** for OCI renewals/reissues your old OCI document will suffice.
