  • Last Name addition after Naturalization

My wife recently got her Naturalization certificate; she does not have any last name. She has only her first name as a legal name. We applied for the last name addition during the N-400, but they did not allow adding the last name during the interview and oath ceremony.

Any experience if it's advisable to add the Last name now, and what is the process?

For a legal Name change (Part2,Question 4 of Form N-400 is specifically meant for this purpose.) Swearing-in must be done by a Judge.
This name-change service is available only thru USCIS offices where the swearing-in (oath) ceremonies are held in a courthouse and presided over by a judge, not a USCIS officer. It is possible with the current COVID situation these requests are not being handled thru USCIS.

Note : If your spouse decides to now change the name after naturalization being completed (thru the court process) - she may need to apply for a new certificate of naturalization certification using USCIS Form N-565.

Thanks so much this is helpful. Yes USCIS officer mentioned they are not doing it in the USCIS office, maybe because of the COVID situation and non-availability of the Judge.
is it an easy process going through court? can you share your experience or knowledge?

Nobody in our family has gone thru a name change.
However, have heard about headaches faced with getting all paperwork synced up afterwards a big challenge.
