  • Bare Minimum (?) to Safely Stay Eligible for Citizenship in 5 Years

    Hi,

A couple months ago I received my employment based Green Card after working for the same company for almost 6 years. However, unfortunately, soon after I have learned that my mother who is in my birth country has cancer and I will have to support her and unofficially take over some of her work responsibilities as a small business owner as she undergoes treatment.

I quit my job (something I was intending to do anyway due to poor treatment), and intended to get a re-entry permit and stay abroad as long as necessary, but my mother wishes that I do not delay my naturalization by doing so. So my current plan is to visit her for as long as I can without endangering my permanent residence and continuous residence for naturalization purposes.

    My ideal case would be:

Stay outside the US for slightly less than 6 months, giving USCIS the address of an acquaintance so that I do not waste money on renting while I'm gone.
Come back and reside in the US for the rest of the year, either via a short term rental or Airbnb-like stay while I do remote freelance work, until I'm eligible for another stay abroad.
Repeat as many times as necessary.

I do have US bank accounts, and a State ID, and have been living in the States first as a student, then as a worker, since 2010.

How feasible is this ideal case? Will it raise suspicion wrt my intentions to reside in the US? I genuinely do want to stay of course, but I cannot ignore my parents in their time of need as well.

    It might work.

If any absence exceeds 180 consecutive days, your continuous residency is broken and you likely cannot naturalize.

Your bigger problem is you immediately quit working for the employer that petitioned your green card.
