  • Citizenship Dilemma for retired state and central government parents

    Hello,
I am a citizen and would like to apply for Green Card ( eventually Citizenship) for my parents who are retired State and Central government employees in India. They are worried that if they renounce their Indian citizenship ( probably in 5 years after getting green card) they would lose their pensions and medical benefits that they got after hardwork of 45 years in service as part of their retirement. After getting US citizenship they intend to stay in India until they feel the need to move to US.

Can anyone please shed some light on drawbacks of getting US Citizenship for Indian parents retired from Government service? Thanks a lot for your time.

I would assume retirement is something one has earned and should be payable irrespective of citizenship or where one retires after the employment ends. I had heard of someone who had their pension sent over to US after they got their green card. I am also interested in hearing any experiences on this forum for the question you asked.
