    Generally before you apply for U.S. citizenship, you must:

    *
    be at least 18 years old;
    *
    have continuously resided in the United States as a permanent resident for at least five years;
    *
    have been physically present in the United States for at least two and a half years out of the last five years; and
    *
    reside in the state or the district in which your citizenship application will be filed for at least three months before you apply.
    hello stevenjohn, thanks for the reply.. we're confused abt this so we called USCIS last night.. the representative told us that he can apply on march 29, 2011, 90 days before his 5th year as permanent resident but he is not allowed to go out of the country for 3mos. before that date..

          It depends on where he is applying from. Usually it can take anywhere from 3- months to 9 months. There is a name check procedure here as well....

          Then there's the oath, passport application (regular or expedited). He can file for your GC (if that's what you are waiting for) right after the oath (using a copy of the nat cert).
