- Currently I'm a GC holder living in New Jersey, and was without a job during COVID, couldn't pay taxes owed in 2019 & 2020. Just received an RFE last week (after passing the civics test of my N-400 interview) for additional proof with respect to my tax obligations / payment and I'm very concerned.
- Quick background; I currently have a State Tax payment plan (making payment consistently throughout the past 2 years) and I owe roughly $2,500 remaining. However, I do not have a tax payment plan for my Federal Income Taxes and I owe almost $8,600. Switched banks over a year and half ago, lost track.
- I have ~3 weeks left to respond with documents referenced in RFE. I can immediately pay off the $5,000 in owed Federal taxes if I sell some of my furniture, other items within the next week whilst with my State taxes payment plan. If I were to send proof (IRS document to show $0 balance) with RFE docs that I paid off all my Federal taxes between now and next few weeks, do I risk jeopardizing my N-400 approval?
- Or can I withdraw my N-400 application at this point (passed civics test, with RFE), and start from scratch? How soon can I reapply for Naturalization after N-400 withdrawal?
