  • Green Card Renewal vs. Apply for Citizenship

My mom is 85 year old green card holder who has never worked in US. Her green card is up for renewal. I am wondering if there is any benefit in applying for US citizenship. She is currently an Indian citizen and would like to travel to India once a year. Since she has never worked in US, i dont think she would qualify for Social security. Currently she is on Medicaid health insurance as permanent resident. If US citizenship doesnt offer any additional benefits that she is currently getting ( ie, Medicaid insurance) then i am thinking it is better to just renew green card. Keeping the green card will also allow her to travel to India more easily. Checking to see if this group knows anything more?

You're doing well to research the finest solutions for your mom! Since she uses Medicaid, renewing her green card may be easier. Citizenship offers voting and travel rights, but renewing the green card may be better for her. It can also allow her keep her perks without the hassle of citizenship. You should always consult an immigration attorney to make the best decision for her!
