  • Citizenship for new parent

Recently, I have heard that a new legislation states that a parent, whose child is born in US, is entitled for US citizenship. Is it true?

My baby was born on January 30, 2011. To my understanding, the new born baby is a citizen of United States, but is it true that I am entitled to citizenship too.

Thanks in advance for your early reply.

Your child is a US citizen by birth but that does not grant you citizenship and does not give you any priority for obtaining citizenship. You need to go through the typical naturalization process of all immigrants which in general (for non-military applications) is based either on 5-year permanent residency or permanent residency with marriage to a US citizen for at least 3 years.

Child can petition for your permanent residency when he/she is 21, citizenship comes after 5 years of PR.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
