  • Neutralization certificate for children born outside US

Hello, we became Naturalized citizens in March, 2011. Both of my kids are born in India, they have GC, so they got US passports along with us.
    I have few questions,
    1. Do we have to apply for a neutralization certificates for kids?
    2. If yes, what forms we have to fill for them?
    3. If not what is the procedure to get a neutralization certificates for kids?
    Thank you,

As far as I know it is as follows but always check with USCIS since I am not an immigration lawyer:

I think there is no requirement to have a certificate since your kids already have a US passport and that is proof that they are US citizens. However, some advise to have certificates issued for your kids so that later in their lives they have independent proof of citizenship and will not be dependent to always refer to your documents (say for example they lose their passport and want a new one issued, they can easily do this if they have their own certificates).

To have the certificates issued you need to fill out and submit form N-600 "Application for Certificate of Citizenship" one form for each kid. Please check the USCIS website for the form and instructions.

My personal opinion, if I were you and if money right now is not an issue, I would have my kids their certificates issued so that they have independent documentation. Just my two cents.
