  • 3 Year vs 5 Year rule

Hi! I'm a green card holder [3 years] and have been married to an american citizen for over 3 years. My wife is considering separation in the future. Is there any substantial difference between applying for citizenship after 3 years based on marriage and 5 years based on permanent residentship?

I'm not sure if I should apply now while we are still married or to wait for 2 more years prior to applying.

    Thank you for your help.

Well, if your separation is for certain, I would wait for two more years. The process for 5-year residency is pretty smooth whereas for 3-years you will be questioned about your marriage during the interview.
