The J visa is a non transferrable visa..you MUST satisfy the 2 y rrequiremnt or obtain the waiver. I came here on a J visa and did NOt get the waiver but i've known afew poeple who did. Its difficult and lengthly. Go to the State Department Website and you'll see the process for obatining the waiver. Goo dluck. -
getting J1 waiver is lengthy if its under no objection from home government.The process is simple except that you have to push the passport office and home department in your state to get the no objection letter.It will take one year to complete the whole waiver process.
So if u r here in U.S in J1 start the waiver process as soon as u arrive .Comment

If you come on a J-1 and you're able to change to an F-1, are you still required to go back? Doesn't the change in status qualify as a waiver?Comment

If you were able to change to the F1 then it means that you were not subject to the residency requirement. Not all J visas are................if you are in fact subject and USCIS missed it when you apply to chnage status, they will catch it at som epointComment
