I am an academic researcher at a US University, here since 2016 on a J-1 visa.
I married a US Citizen in summer 2018 and submitted an I-485 to change from J-1 to Greencard.
Since I now have an intent to remain in the US I informed my University they should not renew my DS-2019 and that my employment would terminate while I wait for my work permit (I-765 submitted along with I-485).
The University admin nevertheless submitted a renewal for my DS-2019 and this was successful, effectively extending my J-1 status, and allowing me to continue working.
I am concerned that I am now in a fraudulent position because I do intend to remain in the USA, and a stipulation of J-1 status is that you only intend to be here temporarily.
Has anyone experienced something like this or have any insights?
Many thanks.
