J1 visa delay....please help

I had interviewed for a J1 visa on June 01, and am due to start residency in Family Medicine on July 01. The consular officer kept my papers and returned my passport saying that he "will contact me after doing some research". It's been 2 weeks now and I am yet to hear from them. My emails to the embassy are not answered nor do they entertain any queries over the phone. My orientation begins today and I have no clue as to why my application is being held like this.
Is there anything that I can do in such a situation/anybody that I may approach for help? I am an Indian, currently residing in Bahrain with my family, and it is here that I had applied for the visa.
Please help me with any information/advice!
