Work Permit

Hello,

I was wondering if I need to be IN USA while the work permit is being processed?

I have a valid J-2 visa and I am applying for an EAD. I need to be in my home country for personal reasons and was wondering if I need to be in USA while the process takes place or if I can travel at the time?

Personally, I don't think you do! It's not about changing your status etc. It's a simple need so that you'll be able to work with J2. Your J2 status will remain, hence you can go home while EAD is in process. Don't forget to take your J1 holder's paper that indicates what program he/she got in as a J1. (or at least a couple years back, they always checked that when a J2 was returning back to the States)
