Extending Visas

Dear Sir,

I am coming to the US on a J1 visa which, including the 30 days grace period takes me from 7th June - 18th August. I would like to extend this for more traveling time as I am taking a gap year. I am a British Citizen and have not been to the US for 11 years when I visited for 10 days. I do not have any criminal records. I am aware that I cannot work during my time in the US but have funds to finance my trip.

Please could you let me know the procedure for extending my stay.

Dear Sir,

Following on from my previous enquiry, I need to file a Form I-539. At the moment my J1 visa is valid until 17th August, I would like to extend this until 17th December on a tourist visa.

Can I file this petition at a field office or must I go to a service centre? How long does the form take to process and do I need to book an appointment?
